MNA/Pohlad Family Foundation Internship Program Summer 2008

This summer internship program will fund the cost of a student intern up to a maximum of $1,200 per student in the summer, 2008.

It is up to you to recruit your intern.

The student should be either in high school or just graduated, ages 15-19. The intent is to provide work for students who may not otherwise be able to find work, most likely because of socioeconomic issues. The Pohlad family very much wants to provide employment for those “difficult to employ.” Students MUST be no older than 2008 graduates. Applicants will be asked to verify this with a recent report card or transcript.

Students may work in any aspect of the newspaper. In fact, we encourage newspapers to find work for students in areas other than their initial interest, so that a news person spends some time with an ad rep or a graphic artist, and so on … learning about the newspaper business. Students may work in news, sales, photography, web site development, graphic design, circulation -- whatever newspaper people do.

The wage is a suggested wage, but if it is not appropriate for teens working in your area, you may lower it.

The wage subsidy is 75 percent for 20 hours a week. The newspaper MUST pay the balance of the cost. The maximum per intern the Pohlad Family Foundation will pay is $1,200.

Here is a sample showing who pays what.

If $8 per hour is not appropriate for your area, you may decrease the wage. Here is an example at $6 per hour.

NOTE: This year, to encourage a wider range of recipients, newspapers will receive a 40 percent subsidy for any returning interns, up to $640 for the summer.
