Is the job title “newspaper reporter” new for you? Perhaps you’re fresh out of college, starting your first job at a newspaper, or maybe newspaper reporting has become your second, third or tenth career? Either way, this intensive, day-long workshop, will help new reporters develop the skills necessary to succeed on the job.
Lead by a team of newspaper experts, attendees will:
- Collect tips and tricks for better news writing and reporting;
- Learn about developing and cultivating sources;
- Learn what it takes to conduct a good interview;
- Learn about covering local governing bodies like the city council and school board;
- Develop strategies for producing better journalism

About the Presenters:
Sue Halena is the Content Coach for Times Media in St. Cloud. She helps the newsroom and individual staffers get the training they need. She edits key local stories and columns. On one of Sue’s social media accounts you’ll see a picture of her at a typewriter at the start of her career. On another account, her profile tells you she’s loving words and pictures in the digital age. The St. Cloud Times is the third professional news organization she has worked for since graduating from Bemidji State University. Her experience includes food, farm, entertainment, crime and business reporting as well as several editing jobs.
John Hatcher is a journalism professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth and received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. He was the education director at the Center for Community Journalism in upstate New York. From 1992 to 2003, he worked for The Daily Messenger, a small daily newspaper in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.
