Findings from the Racial Narratives Survey

American Public Media is offering a free webinar to dive deeper into the unprecedented research that informed the groundbreaking Truth and Transformation: Changing Racial Narratives conference, held March 19-20 at Hamline University in St. Paul.

In this webinar, the APM Research Lab will provide insights into findings of a February 2019 survey of 250 Minnesota media members—with responses from reporters, editors, producers, publishers and other media professionals. Respondents were asked questions about the portrayals of various racial groups in the Minnesota media, the impact racial bias has on accuracy in reporting, and their exposure to training that would help overcome that bias. They also were asked to identify the challenges and solutions to creating more accurate and complete racial narratives.

The research paints an eye-opening portrait of how — and how much — media professionals think about race and racial narratives in local media coverage, and raises important questions about the media’s readiness to report responsibly on Indigenous people and communities of color.

Andi Egbert, Senior Research Associate, APM Research Lab

Andi Egbert relishes telling stories with data. Her research interests include demography, migration, education over the lifespan, the workforce, and especially data to reveal and unwind inequities. She is an enthusiast of data visualization, elegant writing, and evidence-based public policy to strengthen communities. Previously, Andi was the assistant director of the Minnesota State Demographic Center, where she provided expert data analysis to policymakers, state agencies, and the media about Minnesota’s changing populations. Andi holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in English with minors in journalism and humanities from Valparaiso University.

Linda Miller, Director, Network Journalism and Inclusion, American Public Media

Linda Miller became a journalist in the small towns of Wyoming, where newspapers were pieced together with hot wax and border tape, and held together by trust, transparency, and a partnership with readers. As director of Network Journalism and Inclusion at American Public Media, she is still helping journalists deepen relationships with the communities they serve, albeit with better technology.

Linda’s current focus is on creating culturally competent newsrooms, increasing source diversity in public media, and connecting that work to storytelling, audience growth, impact evaluation, and inclusive workplace strategies. She is a licensed qualified administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory and co-project manager for the Changing Racial Narratives in Media project. She is a board member of Journalism that Matters and a founding board member of the Internet Trust Exchange Governing Association. Miller joined APMG in 2008 after a decade of watchdog and public affairs reporting at The Salt Lake Tribune. She has taught and lectured on journalism ethics and public insight reporting at Arizona State University, University of Utah and University of Wyoming, where she earned a B.A. in journalism.
